SHTF-prep shopping. Where? What?

This is not a precious metals question.
Just some real advice.
(Account for tight budget please)
In a large city, what stores, what kind of deals should I look for, etc.

Anyone know or heard of marked increase in traffic, sales, hits, etc to "survivalist" web sites that sell essential goods....like say in the last 1 to 2 months? That info would be known somewhere. I bet there is a spike, but nothing like it should be, were people actually awake.

If one does not have firepower, and is on a tight budget, what would be the priority? Example: bulk beans, bulk rice, etc. or a pistol or shotgun and ammo?
I think the food has it.
I can always find someone down the road to barter for plentiful guns (no one can eat them, therefore will be plentiful)
So I think food is the way to go on what to purchase now.

Re: SHTF-prep shopping. Where? What?

If you have goods but no way to defend them or yourself your screwed. The folks with the guns are gonna have your stuff and you'll either be killed or sent on your way empty handed. Get at a MINIMUM a good shotgun and a few hundred rounds of #4 buck shot. (Remember this is a MINIMUM) as funds become available get the staples like the following:
1. Katadyn water purifier (with extra filters)
2. 6 gallon food storage pails w/lids
3. Food to put into pails, for example Rice, Pinto beans, etc, etc. you get the picture.
4. First Aid kits
5. More ammo and maybe better firearms.

The list goes on.....but for godsake have a way to defend yourself. All people were created equal, Guns enforce the policy.

Regards,

HUB

Amazon.com has a really nice grocery that will ship for free if you order over $25

Ethnic supermarkets is a place to get staples in bulk, like rice. They have better variety than the bob box club stores

Tools are one item that some may overlook. Sears always has some sort of Craftsman hand tools on sale for 50% off. I've been picking up needed tools for the past 5 years or so. I always get the ones on sale for half price. If you are patient, just about everything they have will eventually be 50% off. I have built up a nice set of tools at a great price. Craftsman tools have a lifetime guarantee also. Think about the fact that in a worst case scenario, you'll need alot more tools than you would now. There will be alot of things that you will need to do yourself.

bulk food items like grains, beans, buckets, etc i like the following
www.beprepared.com
www.honeyvillegrain.com
www.bobsredmill.com

for long term dried, freeze dried the above have some but i also recommend
www.safecastleroyal.com
they have some fantastic other stuff too

camping, outdoor stuff basic gear
www.sportsmansguide.com
www.cheaperthandirt.com

for books, info, manuals (most will be $1 + shipping)
www.abesbooks.com
you need books, how to books, basic medical books, garden books, herbal books

herbs, spices
www.herbalcom.com
foods gonna get bland, you need spices and herbals for medicinal tinctures

fish antibiotics--and ONLY fish antibiotics
www.calvetsupply.com
www.vetamerica.com

also, one of the best places to pick up stuff is the good old dollar stores. get a basket and load up on soap, bleach, detergent, bandaids, ointments, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, shampoo, TP, canned meats, honey, jams, sugar, canning jars---you can find all sorts of things there at a real discount, including the tubs to store things in.

spring is coming and so are the yard sales---every saturday get out there and start checking them out, you can find some incredible deals.

check out every grocery store flyers every week and hit the sales and stock up. this week we have butter 3-1# packages for $5, i stock up and then can it. 10 lg size boxes of kleenex for $10, 5# bags of chicken breasts for $6.99 (usually $9.99), lg cans of tomatoes, .79 cents, usually $1.69, can veggies, 3 for $1, each store will have its own specials, just grab what you can and stock up while you can.

there are lots of places to find deals to prepare.

personally, if i was just starting out, id get a shotgun, some shells and some food the first month, the next month, more shells and more food---make yourself a plan for spending and what you need to achieve. then once i had at least 3 months food, water and meds, id get a pistol, more ammo and then more food.

you will progress much better with a plan as you will be needing other things like garden tools, seeds, extra shoes, clothing (hit the resale shops), winter gear (unless you live far south), water purifiers, wheat grinders if you are going for wheat berries instead of bags of flour, etc. theres always something. so if you write down what you want to achieve for 3 months, 6 months, a year then you can break it down to the 'immediate needs' and 'would like to haves' and how each month you will do it. and salt, you need lots of salt and its still cheap.

do you have stuff around your home that you dont really need that you can turn into cash? have a yard sale--its amazing what people will buy. go thru your attic, garage, storage shed, closets.......... one yard sale in one weekend last year gave me enough to pay off a credit card and be debt free which freed up monthly cash resources to buy preps on a regular monthly budget.

i personally believe every single person needs to learn to can food and invest in a good metal to metal canner and at least 100 jars and at least 500 lids. there is a way to reuse lids safely, yes it works, by boiling used undamaged lids in water with 2 table spoons of baking soda for 10 minutes. the rubber will soften and spring back up like new if done right.

you can save money and buy bulk packages of lids on ebay, ive found some real deals, and im convinced soon they will go sky high in cost when J6Ps wife decided to have a garden and can their food.

well, ill shut up, but thats my 2 cents on the subject.

If storing water in this fashion, how long would it actually stay potable for? I'm just curious, thanks!

You can also get grocery coupons at the following sits where you print them off your computer. Not all stores accept them, but Wal*Mart does...

http://www.mysavings.com/

http://www.couponbug.com/

It's always nice to buy something on sale, then hand the clerk a coupon and save another buck or so. We average an additional 10% off our bill at Wal*Mart by using coupons...
